Clean sweep in weekend police operations

"These arrests were made through routine operations and standard police actions," says Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk

Tshwane police arrested 546 suspects for various crimes during joint law enforcement operations across the city over the weekend.

The operations were in collaboration with various agencies, including Home Affairs, metro police and CPFs from respective stations.

Police were under the leadership of Brigadier Samuel Thine and used a multidisciplinary approach to fight crime effectively.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the operations involved high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illegal liquor outlets.

He said 253 people were arrested for crimes ranging from assault and housebreaking to public drinking, driving under the influence of alcohol, and armed robbery.

“These arrests were made through routine operations and standard police actions,” he said.

Van Dyk said Tshwane detectives arrested 233 suspects during the high-density operations, among them 56 for gender-based violence, two for attempted murder, four for armed robbery, and one for rape.

“Four tactical uniformed groups were deployed to police Atteridgeville, Cullinan, Ekangala, and Rietgat,” he said.

“These teams inspected 12 liquor premises and identified seven as non-compliant with liquor regulations,” he added.

He said that liquor, a gambling machine, and 1 980 illegal cigarettes were confiscated and will be destroyed pending the finalisation of criminal cases.

Van Dyk said that 20 people were arrested for public drinking, nine for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for theft and 31 for being in the country illegally and will be deported pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

“In total 668 people and 298 vehicles were inspected as well as 15 Aarto infringement notices were issued, worth R41 250,” he said.

He said one theft suspect has been linked to a 2023 case in Cullinan.

Van Dyk said that the combined efforts of different SAPS stations and Tshwane units played a crucial role in the success of these operations.
