Murder accused granted bail
The late Sibongile “Smomoza” Mataboge is believed to have been killed by her boyfriend after a scuffle.
The man accused of murdering Mamelodi resident Sibongile “Smomoza” Mataboge (23) was granted R10 000 bail last Wednesday.
The Mamelodi magistrate’s court granted Morgan Monyai (30) bail. He is facing charges of murder and possession of drugs on September 22.
Mataboge’s lifeless body was found on the floor of her boyfriend’s place of residence by the police on June 17.
Senior prosecutor Anne-Marie Bendeman said the case has been postponed to November 19 for further investigations.
The accused has not yet paid bail and will remain in police custody.
Monyai was arrested at Mahube extension in Mamelodi East during operation O Kae Molao, according to police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso.
“We were following up on intelligence on drugs. Upon arrival, we found a suspect who resisted the search but was very nervous, frightened and looked suspicious,” said Maheso.
The police search his room and found drugs, money and Mataboge’s body.
Mataboge’s family have expressed their disappointment with the bail.
Her mother, Dudu Mataboge said, “more than 500 residents of Mamelodi including the members of #Notinmyname signed a petition pleading with the courts not to grant the accused bail”.

She said she could not come to court for the bail hearing because her grandchild was very sick.
The family pleaded with the court to quickly start with the trial, so their daughter could rest in peace and get the justice she deserves.
#Notinmyname called for the justice system not to grant bail to Monyai; furthermore, they wanted the courts to hand down the harshest sentence possible.
They also demanded the courts deal with this case speedily so that the family can find closure.
