Capital Park families pleasantly surprised with trophies
"We are absolutely in love with the community of Capital Park. The neighbours have each other’s back and that is the main reason we as a family like being part of Capital Park."
Johan de Bruyn and the Dhlamini family were named overall winners of the unique neat sidewalk competition in the Moot for April 2022.
The neatest sidewalk of the month competition was started by Capital Park Residents and Ratepayers Association (Caprra).
Real One Real Estate Agency joined in as co-organiser of the competition.
Donne-li Johnson of the agency, regularly drives in the area to scout the next month’s winner.
De Bruyn, who resides in Myburgh Street spends hours in the garden to make sure the pavement is well maintained.
“I am always out and about with the garden scissors cutting the grass. I even took it upon myself to cut the sidewalks next to us,” he said.
He has been staying in Capital Park for the past 16 years.
“I was not aware of the competition at all. I had such a laugh at my son when he said my hard work finally paid off,” he said.
De Bruyn happened to be at home when Johnson knocked on the door.
“At first I thought they had the wrong address when this huge trophy was off-loaded in my front yard. Donne-li then explained to me what all the hype was all about, and I was speechless.
“I always worked in the garden before I would meet up with my friends.
“We are absolutely in love with the community of Capital Park. The neighbours have each other’s back and that is the main reason we as a family like being part of Capital Park,” De Bruyn said.
“A neat sidewalk should be an example to others, because it is the first thing of a home that you see when you drive past.”
John Dhlamini and his wife, Trudy, only moved to Fourth Avenue in Capital Park around two years ago.

“I was very surprised and delighted about the trophy.
“I was not maintaining my sidewalk with the thought to come in recognition of being named a winner at all,” said John.
He added that they are truly thankful for the trophy.
“We will continue to keep up the good work to hopefully have the trophy in the front yard later this year.
“It is a great example for my children that hard work indeed pays off and that they also must learn to look after themselves,” he said.
At the end of the year, Caprra and Real One Real Estate Agency announces an overall winner.
