Tshwane allocates a permanent stand and shelter to a mother and child

Last year, the metro secured Orchards 110 to relocate 210 beneficiaries from the Heatherdale informal settlement to make way for a new property development.

A family with a disabled daughter, who needs full-time care, were overjoyed after the Tshwane human settlements department gave them a stand in Orchards Ext 110.

Mokgadi Mokwena’s youngest daughter had a stroke at a young age and requires constant care. With no money to pay someone to care for her child, she is unable to look for work and instead relies on social grants.

“Upon hearing about the family’s plight, the department moved quickly to provide shelter and other necessities to help them build a new life in their new home,” said human settlements MMC Abel Tau.

“We are relieved that we got a place of our own, as our family had abandoned us. We have been staying in people’s yards, but now we
have a place of our own,” said the oldest daughter.

“The social workers said they would help us in finding a school for my sister so that my mother and I can go look for jobs.”

Tau said that restoring Tshwane residents’ dignity was a priority for the department.

“The metro will continue to focus its energies on assisting underprivileged households by ensuring that they too receive quality rudimentary municipal services.”

The family was properly assessed to check their eligibility for the metro’s indigent support programme.

He said the metro asked the social development services department to assist the family with social relief and an appropriate school for the child.

The metro added that it would monitor service providers to ensure that they provide the services to the communities in line with the contract.

Last year, the metro secured Orchards 110 to relocate 210 beneficiaries from the Heatherdale informal settlement, which included Witfontein,
Strydfontein, Little Germany, Mazambaneng, Kabini Gardens, Gomora and Donosa.

The relocation was a result of property development.

According to the metro, five new service providers were appointed to supply and service chemical toilets within affected areas.
