Soccer tournament supports local businesses

The soccer tournament takes places every second week of the month and each team bets R500. The winner takes all.

The Danko Danko Kasi flavour soccer tournament in Mamelodi East aims to create job opportunities for the youth.

The tournament was held at the Mamelodi East section SNS section on Sunday.

Mamelodi East and West residents came in their numbers to support the annual event.

One of the organisers, Hadji Mabena said the tournament had been going strong since 2018.

The tournament is growing each year as more business people around Mamelodi take part.

A total of eight teams participated in the tournament which included Nathi 16 Avenue team, Nathi Mango team, Tzisa’s car wash team, Hadi’s lifestyle event, MossBennet team, Vae clothing and Dhino café.

The soccer tournament takes places every second week of the month and each team bets R500. The winner takes all.

“The tournament is about meeting old and new friends as well as getting the opportunity to market our businesses,” said Mabena.

Mabena further said all the participants taking part are local business people and afterwards they support the business of the winning team.

“The idea is to support local businesses especially those affected by lockdown.”

He added that the tournament keeps the youth busy and away from the streets and crime.

Drug addicts and former addicts also took part in the tournament.

Mabena concluded by pleading with the government to start supporting local businesses, as they are trying to fight poverty, hunger and drugs in Mamelodi.

Parent Magdeline Mokwena (49) said she was happy with the tournament since it has helped her son to stop taking drugs.

She said one of the businesses has also offered her son a job.

“I hope the organisers keep up the good work and do not give up and keep supporting one another,” said Mokwena.
