Stern warning against non-compliant liquor traders

“The law enforcement agencies will continue targeting all illegal liquor outlets who don’t comply,”

Thirteen illegal liquor outlets were shut down, while fines worth R19 500 were issued and liquor confiscated during police’s operation O kae Molao in the east of Mamelodi on Thursday.

“Law enforcement agencies will continue targeting all illegal liquor outlets who don’t comply,” said police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.

“Illegal traders must watch out because we are coming for them.”

The weekly operation not only targets liquor traders, but also holds stop-and-searches and as well road blocks.

He said a crime analysis had found that liquor was the highest contributor to crimes such as common assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and domestic violence.

Many of these occurred at liquor outlets.

Mashiloane said the confiscated liquor would be destroyed.

“During the operation we want to make sure that liquor traders have permits and licences to operate and that they comply with the liquor act,” he said.

“Failure to comply will result in the police withdrawing permits and licences and closing down all non-compliant outlets.”

Mashiloane said the motorists who drove drunk were targeted.

Police advised the public to report any illegal liquor outlets to Mamelodi East SAPS on 012-815-7079, or to the liquor officer on 060-305-5523.
