Ingoma groups wow TUT students

The aim was to promote African cultural heritage.

On April 26, students from different cultures gathered at Tshwane University of Technology’s main campus to celebrate Ingoma.

Organisers say the Zulu traditional dance helps to protect and promote the African cultural heritage.

It also inspires other cultures to do the same with their own and allows students to connect and communicate through music and movement.

Students gathered after a long week of classes and tests to create a sense of community and belonging.

Ingoma symbolises unity and celebration and brings people together, fostering community and social bonding through shared experience and cultural practices.

“Through learning ingoma, they are gaining a deeper understanding of African culture and heritage,” said a spectator.

Some students from other cultures joined in the dancing.

“Ingoma’s vibrant energy and celebratory nature can inspire other cultures to incorporate more joy and celebration into their own cultural practices and traditions,” said Mafina Mogaladi.

Though she was a Pedi, Mogaladi learnt a lot from ingoma, she added.

Organiser Siphesihle Gcwabe Mkhize said: “The purpose of the event is to help students connect with their cultural heritage, and promote pride in their own identity.”

The dancers said they are happy with the support from the students and the institution.

They said the dance keeps them together and gives each respect for others.

However, they said they would be happier when other cultures join them to learn ingoma.

They said they hope to secure sponsorship for these events to grow them outside the campus.

“It will be good to travel around, showcasing our talent and teaching others about ingoma. One doesn’t need to wear traditional attire to be part of the Ngoma dance.”

They said the next leg of the event will be held at Tshwane University of Technology Ga-Rankuwa.

Everyone was happy with the outcome and to be part of the event.

“It was a huge success and students are looking forward to the next one,” said Mkhize.
