North organisation gives homeless hope

The community of Pretoria North is encouraged to come and support the foundation, says founder

An NPO is helping disadvantaged people in the north of Pretoria keep smiling, laughing and encouraged.

The non-profit organisation, Gobusamang health centre, provided warm meals and blankets to homeless people in Pretoria North on Saturday, April 27 to give them hope.

NPO founder Brenda Mainetja said helping disadvantaged people to become self-reliant plays an important role in reducing the increasing levels of homelessness in the north.

“Our job is to hand over parcels to vulnerable community members from time to time,” said Mainetja.

The foundation formed this year aims to help the homeless gain their confidence and follow their dream so that they can have or serve their purpose in life.

“Since we are new, our foundation is still mobile as we drive to community halls and help old age homes and people with disabilities.

We try by all means to encourage people to have a relationship with God and see themselves as the mighty God acknowledges them,” she said.

She said the formation of the foundation and the donation campaign were a success with the help of pastor Keya and Christina Mainetja.

The campaign was to give homeless people blankets and clothes to keep them warm ahead of the winter season.

Many people were touched by this campaign as they saw the good impact of it in their lives,” said Mainetja.

Mainetja said the homeless shared how they came to be in the streets and the challenges they face.

“The smile, laughter, and words of encouragement gave them hope that their situation could change if they changed their way of thinking.

One of the challenges they shared was that they struggle with wet blankets after rainfall,” she said.

She urged the community of Pretoria North to come and support the foundation and donate any item.

“We would like to make a difference in the community and we need the support because we are nothing without the help of others.

People can donate anything because we don’t have a specific target of what we need.

Most funds come from young entrepreneurs and church committee members,” she said.
