Sold-out Loftus Versfeld turns into giant dance floor for Amapiano fans

From soaring beats to shared joy, Loftus became the epicentre of Amapiano culture, boosting Pretoria’s economy and celebrating South Africa’s homegrown global sound.

Loftus Versfeld Stadium swapped its soccer and rugby boots for dancing shoes on August 29, as it hosted a sold-out Amapiano music concert, one of the biggest South Africa has ever seen.

The Scorpion Kings Live with Friends concert, led by Pretoria-born DJ Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, pulled in a crowd of 51 762 Amapiano music lovers – the maximum that Loftus Versfeld can accommodate.

From the first beat to the last, the stadium was alive with energy as fans sang, danced, and celebrated a genre that has become a global phenomenon.

Kabza and Maphorisa, known for pushing the boundaries of Amapiano with their blend of house, kwaito, and soulful sounds, didn’t disappoint.

Their set turned Loftus into a massive dance floor, proving once again why they are hailed as pioneers of the movement.

But the night wasn’t just about music. The concert created a festival atmosphere that spilt into the city. Local hotels, transport services, and nearby restaurants reported booming business, while the event generated jobs for hundreds of people in production and hospitality.

For fans, though, it was about connection. Herman Moloi, who describes himself as a lifelong lover of Amapiano, said the concert was more than just a night out.

“Amapiano is part of who I am, the concert was amazing, and all the artists did not disappoint. The show was special because it felt like everyone here was family. We didn’t know each other, but the music brought us together.

“I even danced with strangers, and we were laughing like old friends. For me, that’s the magic of Amapiano; it reminds us that no matter where you come from, you can connect through music,” he said.

“Seeing Kabza and Maphorisa, Young Stunna perform live, right here in Pretoria, was honestly a dream come true.”

The concert featured other popular musicians, such as popular Nigerian international artists Davido, Msaki, Kwesta, Casper Nyovest, Young Stunna, Daliwaonga, Kamo Mphela, Makhadzi, Ami Faku, Mahwoo, Focalistic and many more.

DJ Maphorisa, a Soshanguve-born DJ and businessman, one of the hosts and a pioneer of Amapiano music, expressed his gratitude to the fans.

“This was truly amazing, the energy from the fans was on another level,” said DJ Maphorisa.

“We have also taken away some lessons that will help us make next year’s show even better.

“Our dream is to keep taking the Amapiano movement to greater heights, not just for ourselves, but to create opportunities that open doors for young artists coming after us.”
