Waterkloof fair a feast of friendship
The annual spring fair is a highlight on the retirees’ social calendar, where people come together to connect on a personal level.
With spring in full swing, residents gathered this past Friday and Saturday at the Upper Waterkloof Retirement Village for their annual Spring Fair.
Several exhibitions were on display where locals could stock up on their favourite fair goodies – rusks, biscuits, fresh meat, and of course, pancakes.
Village trustee Muriel Gass, who has stayed in the village for the past nine years, says they hold annual markets for two days because it takes a lot of effort to organise for the traders.
“We just like doing markets, it’s one of those things, and it’s also entertainment for the people living here. They help on the days.
“They come to sit and chat, so we see a lot of people you may not see during the year, but they come for the market. The jams, the biscuits, the rusks, and everything else that’s for sale here, or just to have a cup of tea.
“It’s a social thing, and they love it,” Gass said.

Gass had been hosting markets for the past 17 years at her home on Murray Street before moving to Waterkloof. These were similar markets, but over four days instead of two.

She insists that the markets are not done primarily for fundraising but for forging connections among residents.
