Muffins mixed with dagga

Muffins mixed with dagga found in possession of 15-year-old school boy at Vukani Mawethu High School in Mamelodi West on Tuesday morning.

The Mamelodi West police arrested a 15-year-old pupil for selling muffins containing dagga at Vukani Mawethu Secondary School. The suspect was arrested on the school premises of Vukani Mawethu Secondary School on Tuesday morning after the school immediately reacted by informing the police when the alleged crime was brought to their attention.

This comes after fellow pupils bought muffins from the suspect and later started feeling drowsy, not knowing what was happening to them.

They allegedly bought the muffins for R5 from the pupil. These pupils, who experienced the strange reaction after eating the muffins, reported the matter to the principal.

Taking swift action, school authorities found the boy who was in possession of the muffins and these were immediately confiscated. The police were informed and sent the muffins for tests to establish whether or not drugs really were present.

The Mamelodi West police spokesperson, Captain Johannes Maheso, warned pupils to take extra precautions when purchasing goods off the streets. The police praised the school, especially the headmistress, for handling the sensitive matter so professionally, adding that involving the police, rather than trying to cover up the unfortunate incident, was the right thing to do. They also said the school had acted in the best interests of all parties involved.

“If more schools acted in this manner when pupils committed a crime, discipline at schools all over the country would increase and young people would learn from an early age that crime does not pay.”

“The case is still under investigation until we receive the test results from the forensic laboratory,” Maheso said.

Speaking to one of the pupils from a nearby school who wished to remain anonymous, Record was told that the process was fairly simple. “They just grind the dagga it until is fine and mix it with the muffin mix,” he said.

If you eat the muffins, you will feel intoxicated. The more you eat, the more intoxicated you get.”
