‘We want speed humps now’

Parents are demanding the erection of speed humps around the Nellmapius Recreation Centre to improve the safety of their children, who have to cross these busy streets to get to the centre.

After the Tshwane metro erected a fence around the Nellmapius Recreation Centre, parents were happy and relieved, but insisted that the metro not forget the speed humps they requested to ensure the safety of their children while crossing the road to the swimming pool.

The Concerned Parents Committee in Nellmapius Extension 4 signed a petition around June demanding the erection of speed humps on Morongwa, Dimakatso and Hlompho streets because their children often crossed these streets to get to the swimming pools. Last Thursday, a reckless driver came down Dimakatso Street next to the swimming pools and lost control of his vehicle, hitting the garage of a house nearby. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the accident made parents worry and they are still awaiting a response from the Tshwane metro.

Jabu Golele, chairperson of the Concerned Parents Committee, suggested that the metro erect the speed humps while the children are busy writing their final examinations. “Now is the right time to address our concerns about the centre and the speed humps, while our children are being kept busy by their schoolwork,” said Golele.

“We want the speed humps to be erected as soon as possible, because children from all over Nellmapius come in their numbers to the centre to swim and Morongwa, Dimakatso and Hlompho streets are the main streets in Nellmapius used by taxis and buses, especially in the afternoon. This poses a safety risk to our children,” said Golele.
