Water wastage in Mountain View

A water leak in Mountain View that has been left unattended since the third week of December has resulted in thousands of litres of clean water being wasted as it runs down the street.

Mountain View is a watertight area, yet thousands of litres of water have been running down Daniel Street since the third week of December and the problem is yet to be attended to by the Tshwane metro. Corrie Pretorius reported the water leak in front of his yard in the third week of December and again at the beginning of January, but his complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

“The water leak could be coming from a burst water main running in front of my yard. I reported the water leak and I was told someone would attend to it.”

Pretorius said that when he called in December, he was allegedly told to call the Water department himself. He said he called the Tshwane metro about eight times to have the matter attended to. “I could not get much help in December. I contacted the Tshwane metro’s call centre again on 2 January and they said they would attend to the matter,” Pretorius explained very disappointedly.

He said that he waited, but that still nothing was done and so he called again on 6 January. Once again they said they were aware of the complaint and would send someone. Last Friday when Rekord visited Pretorius nothing had been done and the water was still streaming down the street.

Pretorius said that the soil had become wet at the leak and he was worried that this could cause the big tree in front of his yard to fall on top of his house or in the street and injure someone. “We pay our rates and taxes and I am disappointed in the metro’s service delivery. My garden looks bad because I cannot cut my grass due to the mud and leaking water.”

He indicated that the roots of the tree could have caused the pipe to burst, as it was quite big. On Monday, the water leak in front of Pretorius’ house was not yet fixed and had begun to worsen.
