Streetlights a headache

The constant street light failures in parts of Centurion has residents upset and frustrated, since many say their complaints are falling deaf ears.

The constant street light failures in most parts of Lyttelton, Die Hoewes and Zwarkops are a headache for residents, especially as this has been going on for months.

According to a resident, the street light at the corner of Sullivan and Rabie streets has been out for a long time. Considering that there are informal settlements in Sullivan, this resident is worried that criminals could take advantage of the darkness to commit crimes.

Residents explained that the matter has been raised on many occasions with the Tshwane metro and other officials, but to date, nothing has been done. They said they did not understand why they had to wait so long for their voices to be heard.

“Since this is a continuous challenge, we need a permanent solution. Month after month we have the same challenge and our concerns always fall on deaf ears,” an angry resident said. Ward 57 councillor, Clive Napier, said he was aware of the problem and that many complaints had been forwarded to him. “I have received many complaints about street lights being out of order for months on end. The normal reporting channels are not working and residents are desperate and have now resorted to approaching officials directly to address their specific complaints.” Councillor Napier assured the residents that he would take the matter up in order to find a permanent solution to the problem.
