Two alleged car thieves were apprehended by the police on Tuesday afternoon after a police K9 unit member shot the rear tyres of the vehicle that was stolen. According to the Lyttelton police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu, the two suspects, both in their thirties, stole a silver Astra in January in Park Town, Johannesburg. The suspects are from Eersterust.
On Tuesday, the men sped down Panorama Road in Rooihuiskraal, crossed Old Johannesburg Road and drove down Nellmapius Road after skipping two red traffic lights. They were apprehended on Nellmapius Road, between John Vorster Road and the vehicle test grounds.
The vehicle they stole still had the tracking device intact and was being tracked by the tracking company. A helicopter was sent out when the suspects were spotted. The police and the K9 unit responded swiftly, but the suspects refused to pull over. One of the officers fired a shot aimed at the left rear tyre. The suspects were not harmed.
According to Gumbu, the suspects were arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, but it is uncertain when they will appear in court.
