New facilities boost learning opportunities at Laerskool Kameeldrift

Recently built classrooms and an ECD centre mark another milestone in the Pretoria north school's transformation from a struggling institution.

Laerskool Kameeldrift in the north of Pretoria is expanding learning opportunities for its youngest pupils following the launch of newly built Foundation Phase facilities.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile joined the school community for the official opening of the facilities, which include classrooms for grades 1–3 learners and an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre for Grade R.

The development marks another milestone in the school’s transformation, with significant growth in learner numbers and educational programmes.

Growth from 82 to 1 350 learners

The new facilities are intended to support the school’s continued growth while providing dedicated learning spaces for younger pupils.

Maile said in 2008, Laerskool Kameeldrift had only 82 learners and was classified as an underperforming school. It also had limited resources and no established sporting or cultural programmes.

“Today, the school has grown to approximately 1 350 learners, with established sporting and cultural activities, a strong record of academic achievement and partnerships that have contributed to its development,” he said.

The new facilities are intended to support the school’s continued growth while providing dedicated learning spaces for younger pupils.

“The Foundation Phase is a critical stage in a child’s education, laying the groundwork for literacy, numeracy and other essential skills. The addition of facilities for Grade R learners also strengthens the school’s early childhood development offering before pupils progress to Grade 1,” he said.

Leadership commended

Principal Marina van Niekerk has been credited with driving the school’s development through her commitment to education and empowering young learners.

The school’s journey also highlights the role of community involvement and partnerships in supporting educational development.

From just 82 learners in 2008 to approximately 1 350 today, Laerskool Kameeldrift’s growth reflects a significant expansion of its educational offering and a further investment in its youngest learners and its future.

Maile commended Van Niekerk for her exceptional and exemplary leadership.

The MEC highlighted her vision, commitment, dedication and selflessness, saying: “Imagine if we had 400 Van Niekerks in Parliament, who have a vision, who are committed, who are dedicated, who love this country, who are selfless, who appreciate the contribution of everyone and who understand that it takes a village to raise a child.”

He said this kind of leadership is needed to create better communities and a better country.
