Domestic worker arrested for murder

A domestic worker was recently arrested for the murder of her employer, an elderly lady, in Heuwelsig Estate.

Investigations are underway following a murder case against a domestic worker who allegedly recently killed an elderly woman in her house in Heuwelsig Estate.

According to the police spokesperson, Captain Agnes Huma, it could not be established what the alleged murderer’s motive was.

Huma said the incident occurred at around 11:00, when the police were called by the onsite security officer for assistance after the domestic worker and the elderly lady started to quarrel. The worker allegedly hit the older woman over the head with an unknown object. The woman died on the scene.

Huma further said the pensioner was staying with the domestic during the day while her son, the owner of the house, was at work. “We appeal to the community to ensure that they have all the proper information when hiring helpers and they must also insist on seeing identity documents or passport copies and the worker’s residential address.”

The chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Sector 3, Hannes du Buisson, said the senseless killing shocked them, since the suspect was a domestic worker and was, therefore, employed in a position of trust.

“We urge members of the public to properly scrutinise their employees by doing background checks and phoning the previous employers to establish whether the person they intend to employ can be trusted. We also encourage the community not to employ people without proof of identification, particularly foreign nationals who do not have legal work permits to work in South Africa,” said Du Buisson.

Community members can contact the CPF for advice at any time on 072-837-5278 or 072-822-9312.
