M26 being reconstructed

New road under construction, but recent bad weather has caused some hick-ups.

Community members and motorists have been urged to remain patient during the R305m road reconstruction project in Erasmia on the M26 that is well underway. The reconstruction runs from the Erasmia entrance and continues for 23km.

The road was in a bad state, and had residents and motorists from Pretoria West and surrounding areas complaining, since they used the road daily.

Ward Councillor Unus Joosub said residents were pleased, as the reconstruction had finally begun after the previous contractor failed to do the work. “The road was really bad, this is a blessing. Community members and motorists suffered a long time with the bad condition the road but now they see progress and are happy.”

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport spokesperson, Octovia Mamabolo, previously told Rekord that the multimillion-rand reconstruction project was set to be completed within 26 months, since the site was handed over to the new contractor in the beginning of July last year.

The scope of the project was 15km of rehabilitation, but was changed to a reconstruction of 23km.

The road’s reconstruction is progressing well.

“We understand that the weather has been a problem, with all the rain, but we are anticipating the completion of the road on schedule,” Joosub said.

A motorist, Stephen Muller, said that it was about time things got back on track and was glad the road was being reconstructed. “With all the potholes in the road and its bumps, vehicles are bound to get damaged. We are happy with the progress and we thank everyone who is making this possible.”

“We ask the community to be patient during the reconstruction. It is understandable that it is quite uncomfortable to drive on such a road,” Joosub concluded.
