Police officer arrested for house robbery

A police officer was recently arrested in Wierdabrug for allegedly stealing a cell phone from a crime scene.

A police officer was recently arrested in Wierdabrug, Centurion, after he allegedly stole a cell phone at the scene of a house robbery last year, police said on Thursday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma, the police officer from the Johannesburg Central police station was arrested at 12:00 for a robbery that occurred in Heuweloord in December.

During the robbery, Huma said four men entered a house and pointed firearms at the entire family before fleeing in a motor vehicle that was later recovered along with other valuables. Huma added that during police investigations, the usage report that was received from the cell provider indicated that a new sim card was used in the stolen cell phone.

“Detectives called the number as well as other numbers that appeared on the report and it was determined that the sim card inside the stolen cell phone belonged to the arrested police officer,” said Huma. She further said it appeared that the police officer might have changed his cell phone when he was called for an interview at the Wierdabrug police station without realising that the sim card he was found to be in possession with, was the same one that was used in the stolen cell phone.

“Both the sim card and the new phone that the officer was using were seized for further investigation. The police officer is being detained at the Wierdabrug police station and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of house robbery.” Huma added that police officers who committed crime should know that they would also appear before a court of law and face the charges, as no one is above the law. Police are still searching for the other three men.
