‘Dump site closes early’

The Tshwane metro has dismissed claims that the Mountain View mini-dump site closes early on weekends.

The Tshwane metro has denied allegations that the Mountain View mini-dump site closes early on weekends, as some residents have claimed. A concerned resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told Rekord that the dump site sometimes closed earlier than its usual time, resulting in many residents dumping their household and garden refuse in an open veld in Suiderberg. “The dump site sometimes closes at 12:00 on the weekends, which means that some residents resort to illegal dumping in a nearby veld.”

According to the Tshwane metro’s spokesperson, Selby Bokaba, the mini-dump site is operational from Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 17:45 and on Sundays it is open from 07:00 to 14:00. “The Tshwane metro’s Environmental and Waste Management Department has investigated the allegations, and all the employees at the Mountain View mini-dump have denied the allegations.”

The dump site has allegedly closed early on three occasions, and residents complained about the smell of the refuse and the health problems it could cause. Bokaba said that residents should not dump their refuse in the open velds, since this is illegal, advising them instead to go to the Onderstepoort landfill site next to Rosslyn, as it is the nearest dump site. He said that those caught dumping their refuse illegally would be fined. “If a member of the public is seen dumping at a place that is not designated for this, there will be a fine of R3 000 payable for the offence.”

He advised residents to call the Tshwane metro police department for law enforcement on 012-358-7065 if any such incidents were witnessed.
