Police officer stabbed to death

A shift commander from the Wierdabrug police station was found stabbed to death in Mamelodi on Monday.

A 49-year-old Wierdabrug police officer was found murdered in Mamelodi on Monday, police said. According to the police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe, Warrant Officer Mokgoato Lekgau (49), a shift commander, was stabbed to death in the early hours of Monday. Mbewe said Lekgau was off duty when he met his untimely death. A passer-by discovered his body at around 02:00 in Mahube.

“There was a visible stab wound to the upper body when we found it, but we suspect there might have been more stab wounds,” said Mbewe. He further said that the motive of the incident was unknown and that no one knew how many people were involved. The police could not confirm whether there were any personal belongings that were taken from the deceased.

A case of murder has been opened at the Mamelodi police station regarding the murder of the shift commander at the Wierdabrug police station. Wierdabrug police spokesperson, Captain Agnes Huma, said Lekgau was dedicated and hard-working, and would be sorely missed by the station and the community he served.

Ward 66 Councillor Ina Strijdom, who worked closely with Lekgau, said she was shocked to learn of his sudden passing. She said he was an excellent shift commander who was always willing to assist and was never scared to go the extra mile. “He was a quiet man with a good heart and integrity. He will be greatly missed by myself as the ward councillor as well as the community he served. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the Wierdabrug police station.”

Sector 3 Wierdabrug CPF chairperson, Hannes du Buisson, said the forum was shocked by Lekgau's senseless murder, especially since he was a man who served the community well and saved a number of lives as a man of the law. “We hope the perpetrators will be brought to justice as soon as possible and believe the police will conduct proper investigations to arrest those who were involved.”
