Disrespecting the dead

Three suspects were arrested for stealing the palisade fencing at the Mnandi cemetery recently.

Three suspects were arrested on Friday after they allegedly stole the palisades at the Mnandi cemetery, next to Olievenhoutbosch. According to Nico Chrisostomou from Monitor Net, they received a call from the security guard at the graveyard and, upon their arrival, one suspect was arrested by Monitor Net for being in possession of the palisade.

Chrisostomou indicated that the incident occurred at around 12:00 when the patrolling security guard saw three people stealing the palisade.

He said that two of the suspects fled the scene. They were later arrested by the Olievenhoutbosch police, as they were running towards the highway. Recently, a suspect was arrested by the Wierdabrug police with a bakkie full of palisade fencing at the Centurion cemetery after the contractor and his employees spotted three suspects stealing it. A wall is being built to address the challenge permanently.

Ward 77 councillor, Cedrick Tsela, said criminals who were stealing the palisades were disrespecting the dead and that this would not be tolerated. He said the matter would be investigated. Olivenhoutbosch police were not available to confirm the arrest and the charges.
