An alleged hijacker was shot at by a police officer on Tuesday morning after he was apprehended for smashing a vehicle’s window. According to Lieutenant Colonel Alida Esterhuizen, a police officer from the Lyttelton station was dispatched to the Jean Avenue off-ramp on the N14 after two complainants entered the station to report a smash-and-grab incident.
When the police officer approached the scene, he stopped at the Sasol fuel station in an unmarked vehicle. Two suspects were still roaming between the vehicles that stood still in peak-hour traffic. One of the suspects tried to smash another vehicle’s window when the police officer arrested him. A fight broke out between the two and the suspect tried to get hold of the officer’s weapon. Three shots were fired from the firearm.
Esterhuizen said it was uncertain whether the suspect was wounded. A search was called out later in the morning, but the other suspect could not be found.
