A family from Booysens are now living in fear after two suspects gained access to their property and expertly dodged the beams connected to the alarm system, implying that they were being watched.
“My son is afraid of sitting in the living room to watch cartoons, he prefers to be with us always. We feel like prisoners in our own house,” Lizelle Benson, owner of the property said.
Benson and her husband took their 7-year old son to school. Upon their return they found that his expensive bicycle was stolen from inside their yard.
“When my husband noticed that my son’s bicycle was missing and asked where it was. I told him it was suppose to be on the grass but we then checked around the yard and could not find it.”
According to Benson the actions of the thieves could clearly be seen on the security camera. One suspect jumped over the wall and ran into the yard, stole the bicycle and gave the bicycle to his accomplice over the wall.
The footage showed how the two suspects, walked slowly in front of the gate, to where they can gain entry into the yard. One of the suspect jumped to steal the bicycle while the other one was waiting outside.
“The one criminal then ran off, while the other one rode off on my son’s bicycle,” Benson said.
Benson believes that the suspects have been watching them and knew everything about their alarm system. “When the criminal stole the bicycle, he knew where the alarm is and how to avoid it from going off,” she said.
It saddens Benson is that her son’s bicycle, which was a birthday present, was stolen. It cost them R2 500 and the whole family clubbed together to buy the bicycle.
She said that the family now live in fear and do not sleep much at night.
A case of theft has been opened. Hercules police spokesperson, Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said the case is under investigation as the camera footage is still being evaluated.
“There is a chance that we might recover the bicycle. We are using our means and ways to get the suspects arrested.”
