Robbers roaming around Lyttelton

The police are looking for three suspects that were involved in a business robbery that took place at the Lyttelton Shopping Centre on Wednesday.

Three suspects robbed a takeaway store in Lyttelton of goods worth R10 500 on Wednesday. Angelique Esterhuizen, owner of Fish2Go, said that according to their CCTV cameras, the robbery took place at around 05:20. “The men broke in possibly only a couple of minutes after the security of the shopping centre made their rounds past the shop,” Esterhuizen said.

On the cameras it showed one man breaking into the shop with what appears to be a crowbar. Once the door was open, he rushed inside and took the flat screens, which were mounted against the wall. His accomplice rushed inside to help him. A third person entered the shop, walked around the counter and took three cooldrinks out of the fridge. “They were arrogant enough to steal cooldrinks as well,” Esterhuizen commented.

The men were busy for no longer than two minutes. When the security arrived, they saw the men leaving in a silver Volkswagen Caravelle. According to Esterhuizen, the security guard did not have enough time to take down the registration. “It is not about the items they stole, but rather the damage that they have done to the property,” she said.

“The effort to restore and replace the damaged and stolen goods is actually worse than the incident itself,” Esterhuizen added. The suspects stole three flat screen TVs, which the store had been using to display their menus, three cooldrinks, a stepping ladder and an empty cash register.

At the time of publication, the police were not available for comment. According to Esterhuizen, the police gave her the number of a police vehicle that has been dispatched to the area permanently due to the high number of criminal activities. For any emergencies, contact 071-675-6417/9.
