Disconnection by “fake” Eskom man

Man, claiming he is from Eskom, switched off several household’s electricity in early hours of the morning.

Residents from Centurion are warned about a man claiming to be an Eskom employee wanting to switch off household’s electricity.

A resident from a security estate in Eldoraigne said a man, who introduced himself as Tiaan, came to their house in the early hours of the morning earlier this week. He claimed he was working for Eskom and said he was ordered to switch off their electricity due to their outstanding accounts. He allegedly had a letter of introduction and authorisation from Eskom.

“I tried to argue with the man as I had no outstanding electricity bills. He kept on saying that it was his job and he would get into trouble if he doesn’t switch off our power. He then continued saying that if we pay him R300 he would not switch it off,” the resident said.

“The man also asked other questions such as whether we have an alarm system,” he added.

Being very sceptical about the man, it was reported to the estate’s security. Jacques Roberts, executive chairperson of the estate’s security said he opened a case at Wierdabrug police station. He said there were at least four residents, including himself, who were caught by this scam.

After numerous attempts, Tshwane-metro was not available to give comments. The electricity department, however, denied a man called Tiaan was authorised to perform disconnections on behalf of the metro.

Eskom also failed to give comment by the time of print.
