Mr South Africa contestant Armand Du Plessis
As the Mr South Africa top 50 contestants were recently announced, Rekord spoke to contestant Armand Du Plessis, a 25-year-old hunk from Brooklyn.

The Mr South Africa pageant is underway again and this year’s top 50 comprises of several hunks from the capital city. After numerous elimination rounds and tough questioning, Armand du Plessis, a resident of Brooklyn, was selected out of 118 contestants as one of the top 50.
A final-year LLB law student at the University of Pretoria, Du Plessis (25) says he sees the pageant as an opportunity to highlight social issues and problems in the country. “I will use the title to bring awareness to campaigns close to my heart like crime stop campaigns and also highlight child abuse and fight to end this in South Africa. As a soon-to-be lawyer, I believe I can contribute to making South Africa a better country to live in,” said Du Plessis.
Rekord spoke to Armand about his ambitions, his life and the pageant.
Describe your personality
I am, most importantly, a people’s person that is humble and ambitious. I also always walk the extra mile for other people.
Who inspires you and why?
Michael Mol. Not only is he my favourite former Mr South Africa, but also my role model and inspiration. I aspire to live a balanced lifestyle and Mol is the ideal and perfect example of how one can live a balanced lifestyle and succeed in whatever you put your mind to. He has a passion for helping people find significance and purpose, through discovering their innate strengths. He is already living and doing what I aspire to become.
What is your philosophy in life?
Smile and be kind. Let others live and be happy. Always strive to make others happy. If you follow your bliss, everything else will fall into place. Have an open mind – it allows you to not judge.
How do you keep fit?
I have always lived a healthy life as I believe a healthy body reflects a healthy mind. I recently started training with a personal trainer in Groenkloof, who assisted me with the right way of eating. Currently, I do follow a strict diet but luckily this strict diet allows me to at least have pizza once a week.
What do you do in your spare time?
Friends and family are important to me and during my spare time, I try to spend as much time with them as possible. I have a six-year-old nephew who takes up most of my spare time, something I enjoy thoroughly as he is teaching me to think like a child. There is nothing more beautiful than the thoughts of our children.
What is your idea of a perfect romantic evening?
The perfect romantic evening will be in the comfort of my own apartment. It will include a five-course candle-lit dinner, with meals prepared and cooked by myself. Wine, music, rose petals and candles will create the perfect ambiance. In the end, it is the company that matters most.
What did you do for Mother’s Day?
Unfortunately I spent Mother’s Day behind my books for a test that I wrote the following day. However, as a family, we spent the previous day with my mom. Luckily I have siblings that spent the Sunday with her, so my mother had an extra-long Mother’s Day – just the way an outstanding mother, like mine, deserves.
