Dustbins theft is the metro’s fault
Residents’ dustbins are stolen as the Tshwane metro waste collection service allegedly fails to collect them on time.
The dustbins of several residents in Pretoria West were allegedly stolen after the Tshwane metro’s waste management department allegedly failed to collect waste on time.
Resident Elsabe van Zyl told Rekord that the problem started in April of last year. “Last week, within two days, three full dustbins from our block of flats were stolen in Christoffel Street. Two bins were taken on Friday morning after 05:00 and the other one on Saturday morning at about 06:00.”
According to Van Zyl this happened because the Tshwane metro’s waste collection service did not show up to collect the bins on Thursday.
“After the third dustbin was stolen on Saturday morning we took our bins back inside the yard,” she said.
The waste collection truck then collected the waste on Sunday without the residents’ knowledge.
“Our bins were not emptied, because we had to put them back in the yard to safeguard them. This is unacceptable,” Van Zyl said.
Van Zyl said that, as a resident, she wants to know what the metro is going to do about the matter as the bins are stolen when left outside for waste collection and the the metro’s waste collectors don’t show up for days..
While in the area, Rekord spoke to another resident who wished not to be named and who said that the dustbin theft was getting out of hand and replacing the dustbins were costly. “It costs us a lot of money to buy the dustbins, and it is not our fault that they get stolen, it is the municipality’s fault because they don’t show up on the set day to collect the dustbins.”
The Tshwane Metro failed to comment on the matter at the time of print.
