Green water to be tested

The Tshwane metro said it would conduct further tests on the green water coming from residents' taps in Pretoria Gardens.

Officials from the Tshwane metro’s Scientific Services Division have taken micro and chemical samples of the water full of green particles in Pretoria Gardens for extra tests to be conducted. This comes after residents complained about the water.

According to the Tshwane metro’s spokesperson, Selby Bokaba, the water network in Pretoria Gardens still consists of asbestos cement pipelines. “Given the frequent pipe bursts in surrounding areas, the city is frequently doing maintenance on the water reticulation system in the suburb.”

Bokaba confirmed that the green particles in the water coming from residents’ taps was algae growth.

The problem, which has been going on for weeks now, has resident Elsie Bezuidenhout worried for her own health and that of her family. She told Rekord that she was not the only one experiencing the problem, her neighbours have the same problem.

Bezuidenhout said that she had to get water from the borehole in the yard, because when she used the polluted water, her clothes had green particles on them. They also have to buy water to drink. Bokaba said they had advised Bezuidenhout to cover the exposed line with a black irrigation pipe. After that, they must flush the entire line with HTH, a water purifier.

Bokaba said they would convey the findings of the water tests to residents when they received them.
