Mr South Africa contestant Morné Emery

The Mr South Africa pageant is underway again and this year’s top 50 comprises several hunks from the city.

After numerous elimination rounds and tough questioning, Morné Emery, a teacher at Laerskool Lynnwood, was selected out of 118 contestants as one of the top 50.

Awarded the best performing teacher in Conquesta for grade 4 Afrikaans, Morné Emery (26), a resident of Lynnwood, entered the competition to inspire young children. “Role models fall every day. The Mr South Africa platform provides the ideal opportunity to be a role model for young kids,” he said.

Not just a pretty face, Emery is a qualified teacher with a Bachelors of Education in Human Movement and Remedial Teaching.

Rekord spoke to Emery about his ambitions, his life and the competition.

What makes you unique?

God does not create duplicates of the same person. Therefore, every person in life is unique in their own way. Everyone is special and has a God-given talent. I have been gifted with an abundance of love to share, especially with kids.

Who inspires you and why?

Kevin McNamara, one of South Africa’s best body builders. A man that has achieved so much in life and still manages to stay so humble is a true role model. If I can be half the man that he is, I can be a great man.

What is your philosophy in life?

What you do in life echoes in eternity.

How do you keep fit?

I do not follow a diet. I follow a healthy lifestyle. A diet is temporary, a lifestyle is forever. I go to the gym to keep fit.

Describe your ideal woman

A woman that is prettier on the inside than the outside. Although a well-groomed lady is always a good sign of confidence and self-respect. Supportive of her husband, but still follows her dreams and passion. Independent but yet interdependent within her sphere of influence.

What are your ambitions?

To create a ‘go-getter’ nation by starting with the young kids in primary schools. To make a difference in people’s lives. If I can change one person’s life a day, I have succeeded.

What did you do for Mother’s Day?

My brother, sister and I arranged a special dinner for her and thanked her for the special person she is. A mother is like a button – they keep everything together.
