Agreements signed to drive investment and inner-city development

Two municipal partnerships aim to attract investors, expand market opportunities and support infrastructure and economic development across the city.

In a move to stimulate local infrastructural and economic growth, the Tshwane Economic Development Agency (TEDA) recently signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) with the Th!nc Foundation and Housing Company Tshwane (HCT), respectively.

The signings took place in late July, with Dr Lucky Mathebula, Chairperson and Founder of the Th!nc Foundation, saying that the MoU brings together TEDA’s mandate to stimulate economic development and investment in Tshwane with the foundation’s public policy, knowledge translation and stakeholder engagement capabilities.

“This partnership allows us to use evidence, dialogue and strategic convening to support investment promotion and wider economic participation,” Dr Mathebula said.

The foundation is a public policy research, analysis and engagement organisation dedicated to advancing the public good through evidence-informed thinking, knowledge translation, stakeholder engagement and institutional capability development.

Speaking at the signing, Dr Lardo Stander, CEO of TEDA, said the collaboration gives an opportunity to strengthen the image of the metro as an investment opportunity, and broaden the networks through which the city can attract investors, markets, and development partners.

The partnership aims to raise awareness of the metro’s investment opportunities among ambassadors, academics, captains of industry, media houses, business organisations and other strategic networks.

Through the agreement, the parties will work together to support increased local investment, expand export opportunities for products and services from the metro into Sub-Saharan African and international markets, and contribute to economic and employment growth.

Regarding the MoU between TEDA and HCT, this partnership also aims to attract inward investment, while rejuvenating inner-city revenue, maximising public assets and creating development opportunities.

Speaking at the signing, HCT CEO Obakeng Nyundu said that the MoU reinforces the shared commitment of two municipal entities to advancing sustainable development and creating lasting value for the capital city.

“This is a great milestone for the city. This is a great milestone for both entities because it actually took 13 years for the two entities to come together and collaborate, work and grow. This is a great milestone, and you will be seeing the great work the two entities will be collaborating on and doing. Watch the space,” Nyundu said.
