Smash-and-grab crimes a problem in Garsfontein

Residents and motorists of Garsfontein are urged to be extra vigilant after a spate of smash-and-grabs in the area, police said.

Garsfontein police are requesting all motorists in the area, especially women, to be extra vigilant after numerous cases of smash-and-grabs and theft out of motor vehicle have been reported in the area.

According to Garsfontein police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dave Miller, most reported smash-and-grab cases occur on the corners of De Villebois Mareuil and Garsfontein Road and on Philadelphia Road at the Woodlands Boulevard entrance.

“They usually occur in the early hours of the morning between 04:00 and 05:00 and the evening rush hour between 19:00 and 22:00. The criminals target people who leave their belongings on the car seat or under the seat, and they especially target women,” said Miller.

Residents are urged to be extra vigilant as criminals usually approach their targets from the blind side. “They approach at an angle where the driver won’t really see them. Motorists should always be on the look-out when they approach a robot,” Miller said.

Miller added that even though smash-and-grab crimes have decreased in Garsfontein, the mentioned intersections are hot spots due to environmental problems. “The areas where smash-and-grab usually occurs have bad lighting and are usually dark. We have, however, the community policing forum and security companies to assist us in guarding the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, police are urging motorist to ensure their cars are locked when leaving the parking lot as a number of theft out of motor vehicles have occurred in shopping centres. “You need to physically check that your door is locked. Do not just walk away and push your remote. Make sure you’re belongings are locked safely in your boot before you leave your car. The same goes for those that are on the road as this will help prevent being targeted,” said Miller.
