Vandalism causes blackout

Large parts of Centurion was left in the dark this weekend due to damage to a power station caused by vandals.

Vandals caused most of Centurion and surrounding areas to wake up on Sunday morning without any electricity.

The Tshwane metro announced that due to cable theft and vandalism at the Brakfontein substation recently, many residents had to endure a Sunday morning without any electricity.

According to a press release sent out by the municipality, it is still not clear when problem will be fixed.

“The city’s technicians are still investigating the extent of the damage and will then give an estimated repair time.”

Yvette Ras, a resident from Rooihuiskraal, said that her family did not appreciate for their weekend to end is such a way.

Ras, who had been without electricity since Sunday morning, said that she was not able to finish her chores in order to prepare for the week ahead.

“Not only is it an inconvenience, but it also costs extra money to get take away food. There is also very little communication on by when we can expect our electricity back on,” an annoyed Ras said on Sunday afternoon.

The municipality also said that residents without electricity are urged to report power failures.

Sms the word power followed by your account number to 082­612­0333. Or report a power failure to 012­35­ 9999, choosing the electricity option or 080­111­556.
