A man who is reported to be operating alone and steal loose items from motor vehicles is wanted by the police.
This comes after several cases have been reported at the Lyttelton police station by residents recently. According to police spokesperson warrant officer Hero Gumbu, all members of the public who have reported cases of theft from their vehicles described the suspect as light in complexion and between the ages of 20 and 25. He enters premises by jumping the fence in the early hours of the morning.
“The man is reported to be using a screwdriver to open motor vehicles to steal items lying around. It seems as if the man is staying close to, if not in, Lyttelton and we appeal to homeowners to keep their valuables safe and to be on the lookout for the suspect. He also carries a torch,” said Gumbu. He confirmed that several cases of theft out of motor vehicles have been opened. He urged community members, who might be patrolling the area, to be on the lookout for the suspect. Anyone with information about the man is encouraged to contact the police on 012-644-8600.
