The Hawks has urged the public to report corrupt police officials in their areas without any fear.
The Specialised Police Unit made the call on Thursday after arresting two policemen stationed at the Sunnyside police station for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a motorist.
The officers, aged 32 and 21, allegedly demanded R800 to release the vehicle of a motorist.
The motorist reported the matter to the Hawks who acted swiftly to arrest the policemen.
Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the culprits apparently stopped a vehicle that had an expired licence disc.
“The motorist told the police he had already renewed the disc but he had not exchanged it with the old one on the windscreen. He said the new disc was at home,” Ramaloko said.
The policemen clearly saw this as an opportunity to make money.
They apparently did not book the vehicle at the police station but kept it outside the station on the corner of Kotze and Leyds streets.
The policemen were arrested after they had allegedly received a bribe from the motorist.
Ramaloko said no policeman was above the law.
“Police should abide by the law and the constitution of the country. People should report corrupt officers,” he said
Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said the station did not allow any form of corruption.
“Police are supposed to serve the community,” Malatsi said.
She said corrupt officers would face the long arm of the law and encouraged the public to immediately report corrupt officers.
Malatsi said corrupt officers could be reported to either the station commander or Crime Stop.

The officers were expected to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Thursday.
