Residents cautioned about crime hot spots

Police urge motorists to ensure that doors are always locked.

An increase in the snatching of handbags, hijackings and smash-and-grab robberies in Centurion has prompted warnings to road users to be extra vigilant when walking or driving towards the Gautrain station. Jolene Prinsloo, public relations officer of Lyttelton sector 7 community policing forum, said victims had been approached and accosted by two men believed to working in groups around the Gautrain station. They were reported to be heavily armed.

“We appeal to the community to be aware of their surroundings, not to walk with earphones and avoid travelling with valuables if possible.” Several robberies had been reported around Die Hoewes, Von Willich Avenue, Gerhard Street, West Street and Hendrik Verwoerd Bridge. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu confirmed the areas mentioned were being targeted by criminals. Several smash-and-grab robberies, bag snatchings and hijackings had been reported. He said the police would increase their visibility and patrol he areas concerned. People should especially be on the alert when stopping at traffic lights.
