Constable shot in Hatfield hijacking

A 29-year-old constable was shot in the chest after a hijacking in Hatfield.

A police constable and three suspected hijackers were wounded in a shootout in Hatfield on Sunday, police said.

Provincial spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said members of the Pretoria flying squad were on patrol in Silverton when they were alerted about a signal from a hijacked vehicle in the Hatfield area.

“The signal was registering the stolen vehicle in a block of flats in Hatfield and other police unit members also responded. On arrival, the suspects fired at the police who returned fire. The police officer and three men aged between 20 and 25 were wounded during the shoot-out,” Kweza said.

It is believed the constable suffered a severe chest wound.

Frikkie Gous, spokesperson for LifeMed ambulance services, said one of three men was shot in the leg.

Both injured people were treated on the scene before they were taken to hospital by various ambulance services.

Police recovered three stolen Volkswagen Golfs on the scene -– one hijacked in Midrand, another in Pretoria Central and a third one with false registration numbers.

They also found a blue police light, a bullet proof vest, police jersey and two stolen firearms.”

All vehicles were seized for further investigation. The alleged hijackers will be charged with attempted murder, possession of stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearms. They will be appearing in court soon,” Kweza said.
