Hole found in prison cell

The Department of Correctional Services is conducting an investigation after a hole was found in a cell at the Baviaanspoort maximum prison.

An investigation is underway after a hole was found in a cell holding two Boeremag members in Baviaanspoort maximum prison, the department of correctional services (DCS) department said this week.

The hole was discovered during a surprise searching operation on July 6 in a cell containing 12 offenders, including two Boeremag offenders.

“At this point, it is not certain whether the hole relates to an attempted escape effort. The investigation necessitated that the cell be cleared and the the 12 offenders were separated and are currently kept in different cells,” said DCS spokesperson Ofentse Morwane.

Morwane said the department was still trying to determine who was responsible.

“It is not clear who the culprits are, as there were 12 offenders in the cell. Standard procedure dictates that disciplinary action be taken against the culprits after the investigation has been completed,” Morwane said.
