Thief caught on CCTV camera
The police are searching for a man who is reported to be operating alone and steals loose items from motor vehicles in the early hours of the morning.
Police have urged residents who park their cars in their yard and not a locked garage to remove all valuable items after they received closed-circuit television footage of a man stealing valuables out of cars in the Lyttelton area.
The man steals loose items from motor vehicles. According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu, the thief enters the premises in the early hours of the morning. “He has a small torch and uses a screw driver. He jumps over fences and walls to gain access to people’s property. If he finds a car parked in the yard, he would use the screw driver to break into the car and take whatever he can find,” he said.
The video footage showed the man closing a door after he had stolen a sweater from a car. He then walked around in the yard, inspecting other cars parked outside.
Gumbu added that motorists who reported cases of theft from their vehicles described the thief as light in complexion and between the age of 20 and 25.
“We believe the suspect lives close to, if not in, Lyttelton. We appeal to homeowners to safeguard their valuables and be on the lookout for the culprit. Anyone who has information about the man can contact the Lyttelton police on 012-644-8600,” said Gumbu.
Policealso advised motorists to ensure that their valuables are locked in the boot of their cars at shopping centres after several cases of theft from motor vehicles have been reported.
“We have issued many warnings and pamphlets to warn the community about this, but it still continues.
“We urge motorists to ensure that their valuables are not left in the car as that attracts criminals. Valuable items should be removed from the car or locked safely in the boot,” Gumbu said.
