Cyclists warned of robbers
Police are urging cyclists in Pierre van Ryneveld and Lyttelton to be vigilant after several robberies have been reported.
People cycling in the veld and enclosed nature reserves around Pierre van Ryneveld and Lyttelton have been warned to be extra cautious after a number of robberies have been reported in the area.
Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the robberies usually occurred in the early hours of the morning.
“Cyclists are urged to avoid cycling in these places at awkward times such as the early hours of the morning or late at night. These criminals usually rob them at knife-point and take their bicycles and valuables. In some cases, the victims are stripped naked so they cannot chase after the robbers or report the robbery in time.”.
Gumbu said police were monitoring cycling trails after they arrested two men.
“We have managed to arrest two men this year who are involved in these robberies. We are currently patrolling and have a task team that is monitoring the situation. We urge people to be vigilant as these robbers watch their victims from a distance to find an opportunity to rob them.”
Arrive Alive advised cyclists on its website to seek safety in large numbers.
“It is important to recognize that there is strength to be found in numbers. Do not go on the road alone and rather find a regular partner able to keep up with your training schedule. This will be very important especially in the event of an emergency.”
In addition, cyclists should notify friends and family of when they will cycle and the routes they will use.
