Two men were arrested on Saturday for house break-in and theft after they allegedly broke into a home on Clifton Avenue in Lyttelton, police said.
“The were not armed. They stole items to the value of R5 000 and were found in the yard,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi.
According to Lyttelton, Wierdabrug Sector 3 Community Policing Forum chairperson Hannes Du Buisson, the arrest came after a resident came home to find his house broken into.
“A resident found his place was broken into. When he looked around, he saw the suspects who had jumped over the wall into the yard next door. The resident called in on Zello and other community members, CPF members, Monitor Net, Cop Watch and the -police responded,” said Du Buisson.
It is believed another community member saw the alleged robbers walking in the street. “He had heard the call on Zello and saw the suspects after matching the clothing. Monitor Net chased after them and arrested one of them. The other one was later arrested a few blocks away. The third suspect is still at large,” Du Buisson said.
Upon returning to the scene with the suspects, the police and CPF found a vehicle on the premises which is believed to be the getaway car.
“A resident in the area pointed out that another burglary occurred today and those guys were identified and their stolen goods were found in their getaway car. They were positively linked to the other robbery. Fortunately these men never got a chance to run away with any of the stolen items,” Du Buissonn said.
