A man from Rietfontein is very thankful for the quick response of the Moot police after an armed robbery at his house on Tuesday morning.
Jaco Erasmus’s house was targeted by two suspects at around 10:00. One of the robbers jumped his two meter high electrically wired fence.
The Moot police responded to a complaint of house robbery and managed to arrest one of the two men who acted as lookout while his accomplice robbed Erasmus’s house.
According to Lieutenant Linda Jerling, spokesperson of the Moot police station, the second suspect’s house was searched and many of the stolen goods were found there. The suspect was, however, not at home.
“We are very proud of the quick response of our officers,” Jerling said.
Susan Malunga, Erasmus’s domestic worker, was home during the incident.
Malunga locked herself in the main bedroom, but one of the suspects broke open the backdoor and the bedroom door with a crowbar and held her at knife point while he took various valuables from the safe he had also broken open.
“I was very scared. The man hit me in my face and threatened to hurt me if I try to call anyone on my cellphone. When he ran away, I went outside and called for help, but no one responded,” Malunga said.
Erasmus believed that someone who might have worked for him at some time might have given the suspects inside information because the suspects knew exactly where the safe was and how to enter the lapa area.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons in the area to the police as soon as possible.
“People need be more aware of what is going on in and around their neighbourhoods. I am very glad that Susan had not been hurt during the robbery and that no one else was at home. My children were at school but they had been at home last week during the school holidays. It scares me that these people could gain access to my property so easily. I’m very thankful that the Moot police responded so quickly,” Erasmus said.
The second suspect is still at large.
