Sunnyside cluster arrests 58 over weekend

The Sunnyside cluster undertook an operation to reduce crime over the weekend.

Police in the Sunnyside Cluster arrested 58 people for various criminal offences over the weekend, police said.

Police spokesperson, Captain Colette Weilbach, said the cluster, consisting of the Sunnyside, Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Villieria, Pretoria Moot and Lyttelton police stations, went for a forceful effort to reduce crime from Friday till Sunday morning.

Of the 58 arrests that were made, 15 people were arrested for drunk driving, eight were arrested for possession of dagga, ten were arrested for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles, seven for shoplifting and six for theft.

In Lyttelton, two suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms.

Criminals were also arrested for theft out of motor vehicles, housebreaking, possession of car-breaking equipment and fraud.

They will appear in the Hatfield Community and Pretoria Magistrate’s Courts respectively on Monday.

“Through these concentrated efforts the police want to make it unbearable for criminals to commit crime in the Sunnyside cluster,” Weilbach said.
