ATM suspect arrested

It’s alleged that the suspect stuffs papers in the ATMs.

A 42 year old man who stuffed ATMs with papers has been arrested.

Police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said the man used the papers to jam bankcards of those wishing to withdraw money.

Recently, several cases were reported at the Wierdabrug police station whereby residents were robbed of cash after being followed to ATMs. In a recent incident, four men approached and searched a man, took his car keys and fled with the money in his possession.

The man was arrested while appearing before the Pretoria Magistrate Court on charges of malicious damage to property committed in Pretoria Moot jurisdiction.

Huma said: “We would like to appeal to the community to limit the amount of money they withdraw at ATMs or at banks and avoid carrying large amounts of money because there are people who follow them after they had withdrawn money and then rob them.”

People should transfer large amounts of money electronically to avoid such crimes, Huma said.

He also warned of escalating vehicle hijackings in Centurion, saying: “It takes place between 18:00 and 20:00 in the evening when people come from work.”

She appealed to the public to alert the police should they be suspicious of vehicles or people following them.

The arrested man was still in police custody and would appear in court soon.
