Alleged cable thief arrested

The suspect was arrested after an alarm went off at the substation.

A man in his early 20s has been arrested in connection with a burglary at a substation in Doringkloof, police spokesperson warrant officer Hero Gumbu said on Wednesday.

The man was caught after police and a security company responded to an alarm that went off around 20:45 on Tuesday. He was taken into custody at the substation on the corner of Tugela and Jasper avenues in Doringkloof.

“When the police arrived at the scene, they found the door of the substation open and the padlock broken. The police then found the man inside and when he was asked if he worked for Tshwane electricity department he could not answer,” Gumbu said.

He will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police believe the man might have had intentions of stealing cables and they have urged members of the community to report any suspicious movements in the area to the police.
