Tshwane metro police under spotlight
Tshwane metro police under spotlight after incidents of crime and corruption came to light.
No fewer than 33 members of the Tshwane metro police were convicted of corruption this year.
Ben Chapman, Democratic Alliance member of the oversight committee on safety and security, revealed that 303 cases of ill-discipline were reported last year, and this year the figure went up to 479.
Altogether 62 instances of unprofessional conduct were reported, there were 64 counts of theft, 77 counts of damage to council property and 11 counts of bribery.
“The list goes on and on. The question can be asked how many officers are getting away with ill-discipline, which is increasing yearly”, he asked.
“When it comes to disciplinary cases, even directors and commanders are implicated. It seems when officers are promoted to the rank of sergeant, we see 213 counts of ill-discipline. Something is wrong with this picture.”
He asked how many officers were allowed to interact with the public after they had been implicated in ill-discipline, be it theft or corruption, and whether such officers were allowed back on street while their cases were pending.
“If so, would that be fair to the public? All that we ask for, is an efficient, honest and trustworthy metro police force, but it seems that the police force is getting more and more out of control,” he said.
