Hijackings in Wierdabrug area

A car was recovered in Atteridgeville after it was hijacked in Wierda Park over the weekend.

Motorists and residents of the Wierdabrug area are urged to be vigilant after a hijacking took place in Wierda Park on Saturday morning.

Wierdabrug sector 3 community policing forum said a blue Toyota Tazz was hijacked at gunpoint. “One of our members called in on Zello and said that one of his employee’s cars had been stolen on Theuns van Niekerk Street. The employee’s car was recently bought and still had the ‘For Sale’ sign on it and we put out an alert on all our social media groups,” said chairperson Hannes du Buisson.

Du Buisson said that feedback was received from the CPF member, stating that the car was recovered in Atteridgeville. “We received information that the robbers started to shoot at the police. A shoot-out ensued between the police and the suspects. One of the suspects was shot and was declared dead. The hijacked car had a number of bullet holes,” he said.

Du Buisson added that hijackings in the area, however, have not increased. “It is believed that the hijackers were travelling in a silver Mercedes Benz that might be involved in several hijackings in the area. I would say hijackings in the area have not increased. I think that the community is more aware of them and they are more alert. Because of the Zello system, thousands of people can report to us and we know more about the crime,” said Du Buisson.

Security company ADT issued out the following safety tips when it comes to hijackings:

– If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off if possible and/or use your hooter to attract attention.

– Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious looking characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the police or ADT.

– Always be on the alert for potential danger and be on the lookout for possible escape routes and safe refuge along the way.

– Always have your identity document and driver’s licence in your possession and a pen and notepad ready to make necessary notes.

– If possible, avoid driving in the dark. Hijackers may stage a minor accident, such as should your car be bumped from behind and you do not feel comfortable with having them involved in the situation, drive to the nearest police station for help.

– Never open your vehicle’s window or door for any stranger. If a suspicious person is near your unoccupied car, go to the nearest public area and ask for assistance.
