Two men were arrested on Wednesday while burning copper cables in Mooiplaats, Erasmia police said.
Spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said a resident tipped off police while they were patrolling the area around 9:00 in the morning. A 27-year-old man stopped the police and told them about the cable theft.
“The police found the two men burning cables and arrested them on the spot. The two, aged between 25 and 31, are said to be employees of a construction company in Johannesburg.”
Moloto said the police could not confirm the value of the stolen cables. The two men will appear in the Attridgeville Magistrate’s Court soon.
Police investigations into cable theft in the area were continuing, he said.
Community leader Charles Malete said locals had reported that stolen cables were often being stored inside shacks. He said residents were willing to work with the police in order to bring down crime in the area.
