Five robbers armed with automatic rifles are still on the run after they robbed a Total filling station in The Reeds on Saturday night.
MonitorNet security was the first on the scene. The robbers fired shots at them but the reaction team managed to escape unscathed. The robbers bombed a drop safe located on the premises and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
Reports indicated that the heavily armed men had been involved in a similar robbery at an Engen filling station in Olievenhoutbosch around midnight last night.
Theo Petzer, operational manager of MonitorNet, said two of their reaction vehicles responded to a panic alarm triggered by the Total filling station. “When my men reached the premises, the robbers opened fire. Thankfully no one was injured during the shooting,” he said.
Captain Thomas Mufamadi, police spokesperson, said the robbery occurred at 01:05. “All the personnel were tied up and locked in the office before the robbers bombed the safe. When the security company arrived on scene, shots were fired, but luckily there had been no injuries.”
Mufamadi said the robbers were heavily armed with AK-47’s and pistols.
He said that a similar robbery occurred at an Engen filing station around midnight in Olievenhoutbosch. “The modus operandi was exactly the same. We are investigating whether or not both incidents were connected.”
No arrest had been made at this stage.
