Beware of hijackers

Check your driveway and street before you leave or enter your premises.

Being wide awake when driving has become more vital in view of a sharp rise in hijackings in various parts of Centurion, says police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma.

Be particularly aware between 18:00 and 20:00 when most hijackings took place, she advises. Avoid parking vehicles on driveways.

MonitorNet’s operational manager Theo Petzer has some more safety tips against hijackings:

– Switch off the car radio when approaching your house to eliminate any possible distraction, and focus on your surroundings.

– If you have noticed any vehicle behind you, drive to a police station or a busy shopping centre or filling station.

– Remember to stop your vehicle just on the inside of your entrance gate and select reverse while waiting for the gate to close.

– Check your driveway and street before you leave or enter your premises.

Make sure your driveway is well lit and clear from shrubbery where perpetrators could hide.

– Be aware of unknown pedestrians close to your residential address. Should you notice someone lurking, drive pass and return later.

– Know your neighbours.
